Dr. Sabrina Darrow is Associate Professor and licensed psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry. She is passionate about improving the link between research and mental health services with the goal of empowering individuals to reach their personal goals. She has a particular interest in helping youth struggling with depression, anxiety, and suicide. Dr. Darrow's expertise is in clinical behavior analysis and her primary research interests include the clinical utility of assessments, mechanisms of action in psychotherapy, and implementation science.

Dr. Darrow directs the Wavefront program at UCSF. The Wavefront Program provides evidence-based treatment, training, and research to improve emotion regulation for young people impacted by mood, anxiety, suicide, trauma, and OC-related disorders. In this role, she leads the evaluation and research embedded in the Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy clinics. Dr. Darrow is also leading a collaboration with San Francisco County’s Child, Youth and Family System of Care to implement and evaluate Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents in the public mental health system.

Dr. Darrow is also a clinician within the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program for Adolescents and Young Adults (http://psych.ucsf.edu/DBTprogram) where she works with high risk, multiproblem youth and their families. She also supervises trainees’ clinical work with youth.

Dr. Darrow obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Doctorate in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Nevada, Reno. She completed her internship at the Southern Arizona Veterans Health Care System and postdoctoral studies, including the T32 Clinical Services Research Training Program, at UCSF.

Gathering stakeholder perspectives and modeling emotion regulation to predict youth suicidal behavior
    American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Oct 1, 2020 - Sep 30, 2022
    Role: PI
Description: This study will use data collected during Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) to develop models of dynamic near-time predictors of youth suicide. Specifically, the data from daily diary cards completed by DBT-A clients, medical records, and a DBT-A outcome evaluation database will be combined and intensive individual level time-series modeling will be used to identify patterns of change useful for predicting youth suicidal behaviors and improving DBT-A outcomes. Given the goal of clinical utility and potential next steps (changing self-monitoring procedures, leveraging digital technology, providing data to guide ongoing treatment decisions), under Aim 3 we will establish an advisory board to obtain input from multiple stakeholders on this innovative research approach.
Getting parents what they need, when they need it: A mixed methods pilot study to improve parent engagement in mental health services for suicidal youth
    UCSF CTSI, NCATS RAPJun 1, 2020 - May 31, 2020
    Role: PI
Description: Suicide is a major public health concern for adolescents; self-harm and co-morbid mental health disorders are risk factors for suicide attempts. While emergency services and hospitalizations help stabilize and ensure teen safety in the short term, effective outpatient services that address risk factors, engage caregivers, and minimize disruptions in adolescent lives are imperative. Dialectical behavior therapy for adolescents (DBT-A) is an evidence-based outpatient treatment for decreasing teen suicidal behaviors and risk factors but improvements, specifically to keep caregivers engaged in DBT-A, are needed to keep more teens safe. This study examines the usability, feasibility, and acceptability of integrating a text message system into DBT-A to improve parent engagement using a mixed methods design. The text messaging system will be implemented into DBT-A services at Langley Porter Clinics and quantitative and qualitative data will be collected on the proposed mechanism of action (parent beliefs) and outcome (engagement in services).
Let’s Text! Improving Engagement in Depression Services for Diverse Teens
UCSF Resource Allocation Program (RAP) Digital Mental Health Award RAPJul 1, 2019 - Dec 30, 2020
    Role: Co-PI
Description: Recent applications of innovative mobile health (mHealth) tools, such as text messaging (SMS), hold promise for increasing evidence-based intervention effectiveness in diverse, depressed teens. This project aims to evaluate the effectiveness, mechanisms, and efficacy of CBT group with and without adjunct text messaging as the first-line service for depressed teens at two UCSF mental health clinics: Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospitals and Clinics and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). Dr. Darrow’s role includes quantitative data collection and analysis, coordinating efforts to improve and maintain the text message platform (HealthySMS), and working with providers in the Langley Porter Mood and Anxiety clinic to integrate HealthySMS into the CBT groups for depression.
