Dr. George obtained his M.D. degree from Duke University School of Medicine and his B.A. from Amherst College, both with honors. He received an M.P.H. in H&N cancer epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health. He then completed a two-year clinical and translational research fellowship in head and neck cancer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Jonathan R. George is a surgeon specializing in advanced head & neck cancers at UCSF. His primary areas of focus are advanced thyroid cancer and advanced head & neck melanoma surgery. More broadly, he provides thyroid/parathyroid surgery and head & neck (H&N) cancer surgical care. From an H&N endocrine perspective, his practice offers comprehensive management of thyroid nodules, multinodular goiters, recurrent & locally advanced thyroid cancers, and parathyroid diseases. In melanoma, he provides specialized surgical treatment for H&N melanoma, including wide excision, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and neck dissection, as indicated. As a head and neck surgical oncologist, he offers surgical treatment of all other head and neck cancers, including all upper aerodigestive tract malignancies including throat and oral cancers.
Dr. George is a member of the American Head and Neck Society and the American Thyroid Association, and is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. He completed residency training at UCSF Medical Center in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, followed by a fellowship in advanced head and neck surgical oncology and head and neck endocrine surgery at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. In advanced thyroid cancer care, he was personally trained and mentored by master thyroid surgeons Lisa Orloff, MD, and Gary Clayman, DMD, MD. He was fellowship-trained by Randy Weber, MD, and Jeff Myers, MD, master surgeons of head & neck surgical oncology and advanced H&N melanoma surgery, respectively.
He is a member of the interdisciplinary UCSF Advanced Thyroid Surgery Program as well as the UCSF Head and Neck Oncology Program. His academic research focuses on prospective clinical trials to advance targeted treatment of thyroid and head and neck cancers. He is currently investigating the effects of direct HER2 inhibition in the window of treatment setting in patients with surgically-resectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. He is a member of UCSF's Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he is personally mentored by CTSI leader Jennifer Grandis, MD.
Dr. George is committed to providing comprehensive, whole person-centered care with a focus on disease cure and excellent outcomes while maintaining an accessible relationship with each patient. He provides same- or next-week consultations for all thyroid/parathyroid and head and neck cancer patients. He provides surgeon-performed ultrasound evaluations and same-day biopsies of suspected thyroid and head and neck tumors.
