      Dr. Thornton practices cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care medicine at UCSF. He is dedicated to improving the quality of care that patients receive while in the ICU and helping patients and families navigate the often confusing environment that the modern ICU has become. He helps lead the Critical Care Innovations Group which seeks to implement novel initiatives that enhance the safety of the ICU, improve the workflow surrounding new technologies in healthcare, and devise methods to increase the engagement of patients and their families in their own care in the ICU.

      He is also deeply committed to education and serves as the program director for UCSF's Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship program. Additionally, he serves as the chair of the departmental residency well-being committee, and is actively involved in teaching UCSF medical students, residents, and fellows in a variety of clinical and non-clinical environments.
