He is the Director of the Division of Laryngology, Medical Director of the Voice and Swallowing Center, and Director of the Medical Director of Speech Language Pathology Services within the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Courey received his medical degree from SUNY Buffalo in New York, and he finished a one-year internship from Beth Israel in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Courey completed a general surgery residency at Beth Israel, and he also completed an otolaryngology/head and neck surgery residency at SUNY Buffalo, followed by a laryngology fellowship from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. Prior to UCSF ONHS, Dr. Courey was an Associate Professor in Otolaryngology at Vanderbilt and the Medical Director of the Vanderbilt Voice Center.

Dr. Courey is well-regarded nationally and internationally for his skills in the clinical management of patients with airway, voice and swallowing disorders. He prides himself on evaluating patients through a multidisciplinary approach with speech-language pathologists, vocal trainers, laryngologists, neurologists, radiation oncologists and voice scientists. His research interests include rehabilitation of the paralyzed larynx, surgical management techniques for cancer of the voice box, management of voice problems in musicians and professional speakers, and developing an understanding of the central nervous system regulation of voice production.

Dr. Courey is a member of the American Academy Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Bronchoesophagological Association, The Triological Society, and the American Laryngological Association. He has published over 70 articles, and he has contributed to over 20 book chapters.
