Dr. Vaikom S Mahadevan joined UCSF from the UK in July 2014 as Director of Structural and Adult Congenital cardiac Interventions and the Wiliam W Parmley Endowed Chair in Cardiology and Associate Professor of Medicine. Following completion of his intital medical training in Stanley Medical College in India Dr. Mahadevan did his higher Internal Medicine and Cardiology training in the United Kingdom. Subsequent to this he was an advanced British Heart Foundation fellow in Adult congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) and Intervention at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London and did a further fellowship in the same specialities at Toronto General Hospital, Toronto, Canada. He joined as a Consultant Cardiologist at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, Central Manchester University Hospitals in 2005 and held this position until his move to UCSF. He established a large ACHD and structural cardiac Intervention program in Manchester and was the Lead clinician (Director) for both of these programs. Apart from ACHD and related intervention he has a major interest in transcatheter valvular implantation, since he performed his first implants in the UK in 2007 and has performed these interventions in all four positions in the heart including pioneering the first successful transcatheter valve implant in the mitral position. He also has expertise in the management of pulmonary hypertension in ACHD patients. Dr. Mahadevan is a proctor for implantation of transcatheter valves and in this role has trained a number of interventional cardiologists in Western Europe and internationally. He has served as invited faculty in a number of international meetings and on invitation performs complex intervention procedures overseas.
Dr. Mahadevan's major research interests include clinical ACHD, ACHD and transcatheter valvar intervention and has published a number of papers in these areas. His basic science research interests include looking at arrythmias in adult patients with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF). He has two major grants from the British Heart Foundation both leading to completion of Doctoral projects by students under his supervision. He also has been the principal site investigator for a number of clinical studies including registries of pulmonic valve implantation in Europe.
