The Chief of Staff is the primary senior advisor to help the Graduate Dean/Vice Chancellor of Student Academic Affairs determine, articulate, and execute the mission, vision and strategies of the organization. The COS works closely with the Dean/VC to increase the bandwidth and velocity of the Dean/VC, who has to concentrate her time, effort, and priorities on strategic activities.

The COS is responsible for all change management within this organization of 120 staff and for oversight of the staff’s relationships with faculty and administrators in all of UCSF’s professional and graduate degree programs and with staff in related service units. The COS is a resident in-house resource and helps increase the practical experience of the senior management team as a whole, as well as their individual abilities to deliver expected results.

The COS is the liaison for matters of importance pertaining to the Dean/VC’s office; assumes responsibility for filtering projects; responds to internal and external requests; serves in an advisory capacity for fiscal matters; and coordinates the activities and initiatives in the operational and programmatic areas of the organization. The COS oversees $16M in student funding, including central campus funds, fellowships from NSF and various agencies, endowments and gifts, and the Office of the President.

The COS serves as the liaison and primary point of contact to graduate students, program directors and other faculty, program administrators, and other University constituents for student financial support issues, student employment, and related policies. The COS leads Graduate Division and Student Academic Affairs Communications, providing staff supervision, budget and resource management, and strategic planning.
