Abigail M Hatcher, PhD an Assistant Professor at the School of Public Health of the University of the Witwatersrand and an Honorary Researcher at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Hatcher’s research examines intimate partner violence (IPV), poverty, and mental health as social determinants of health. She is principal investigator of a feasibility study of a trauma-informed mental health intervention for pregnant women living with HIV and IPV in inner-city Johannesburg (NIH-funded, PI). She is also testing whether a home-based couples intervention improves HIV testing and adherence around the time of pregnancy in rural Kenya (NIH-funded, Co-I). She has previously led trials and process evaluations on reducing men's perpetration of IPV in peri-urban settlements (UKAID funded; Co-PI), reducing women's exposure to IPV in pregnancy (WHO funded; Co-PI), improving food security among HIV-positive farmers (NIH funded; consultant), addressing IPV within HIV primary care (NIH funded; Co-I), reducing women's exposure to HIV and IPV through microfinance and gender empowerment (consultant), and improving linkage to HIV care through community-based testing (Co-I).
