    Dr. Gomez has provided direct patient care for patients with a >50% Spanish-speaking adult as well as maintained a practice with a pediatric, maternal, and HIV/AIDS population since joining UCSF in 2000. He teaches residents and students in comprehensive Family Medicine and HIV/AIDS care in the inpatient and outpatient setting. He was the residency director for the department's Family Medicine Residency program from 2005-2017. As Department Chief, he oversees the department's clinical and educational programs including the residency and three fellowship programs, and has developed partnerships with federally qualified health centers and other area health institutions in the region around health care access and education while continuing to deliver comprehensive full scope Family Medicine and HIV/AIDS medical care.

    Dr. Gomez community and research interests include educational innovation and the expansion of health care access. He has been recognized for innovative work around faculty development as well as for work developing programs that enhance the placement of primary care physicians in areas of unmet need. As the AHEC director, he oversees the development of community-academic partnerships that has led to the expansion of health professions education to meet the needs of the underserved across the state.
