    Butter is the University librarian and assistant vice chancellor of library services and instructional technology. She joined UCSF in 1992 after working at the Welch Medical Library at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Utah Health Sciences Library. In 2007, she received the Medical Library Association's Frank Bradway Rogers Award for her work in developing the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library, a digital library hosted by UCSF. She is listed in both Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who in America. She received a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley and a master's degree in library science from Emporia State University.
