Russyan Mark Mabeza, MD, MPH
Overview
Russyan ("Russian") Mark Mabeza, MD, MPH, is a General Surgery resident and National Clinician Scholar at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). His research integrates implementation science, health services research, and surgical outcomes to understand how social and structural drivers shape access to high-quality surgical care. His goal is to develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based interventions that improve surgical care delivery and advance health equity.
His scholarship spans surgical outcomes, health policy, and medical education, with particular interests in implementation science, equity in surgery, cancer care delivery, perioperative care, and the structural drivers of health. He has authored more than 35 peer-reviewed publications in journals including New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Network Open, Surgery, Journal of Clinical Oncology: Oncology Practice, and AMA Journal of Ethics. His current research is supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute through the PRISE T32 Postdoctoral Training Program within the UCSF National Clinician Scholars Program.
In parallel with his research, Dr. Mabeza is committed to advancing medical education and mentorship. He has developed national curricula on structural competency and antiracist medical education, served in editorial leadership roles for medical education journals, and mentors students and trainees pursuing careers in academic medicine, surgery, and health equity research.
Dr. Mabeza's long-term goal is to become an academic surgeon-scientist whose research informs policies and implementation strategies that reduce inequities in surgical care and improve outcomes for historically marginalized populations. He welcomes collaborations in implementation science, health services research, surgical outcomes, health equity, and medical education.
