Dr. Sara Hughes is Associate Dean of Education and Student Affairs in the UCSF School of Dentistry. She is native of England, where she founded and led for many years a primary care based intra-professional dental school.

She joined the UCSF family in January 2017, having moved here from Singapore. She is well travelled, 62 countries to date, and has been invited to give keynote presentations on clinical education around the world.

Her work in education has been widely recognized. In September this year, she was accepted into the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators. Having only been in the US and UCSF for eighteen months this is a tremendous achievement. In 2012, she was inaugurated National Teaching Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, and in 2014 she was honored with a Principal Fellowship; the two most prestigious awards in UK higher education.

She holds the first UK Endowed Chair in Dental Education, and in 2006, was honored Member of the British Empire (MBE), by her Majesty the Queen of England for her services to dental education, and work with what she terms “hard to reach and easy to ignore communities”.

Dr. Hughes, maiden name, Holmes, is the first member of her family to go to colleague and University.
