Dr. Fan is a Professor in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he serves as Co-Chief of the Vascular and Cardiac Imaging Research Division. Prior to joining UCSF, he was a tenured Associate Professor in the Departments of Radiology, Radiation Oncology, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Southern California and an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center/University of California, Los Angeles. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University.

An NIH-funded magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scientist with more than two decades of experience, Dr. Fan has dedicated his career to the development and clinical translation of advanced MRI and machine learning technologies for rapid and precise disease assessment. His research spans vascular and cardiac imaging, quantitative cancer imaging, MR-guided radiation therapy, and deep learning. Dr. Fan has authored more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and 300 conference abstracts. He is an appointed member of the NIH Emerging Imaging Technologies and Applications study section, a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, and a Distinguished Investigator of the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research. He is also deeply committed to training the next generation of scientists and has mentored 17 predoctoral students, five postdoctoral fellows, and two junior faculty members. Dr. Fan's laboratory is currently accepting new PhD students through the UCSF-UC Berkeley Joint PhD Program in Bioengineering.
