Dr. Roth received her medical degree from Tufts University, then completed a residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in psychiatry and the law at the New York University School of Medicine.
From 2009 to 2018, she worked as an attending psychiatrist and unit chief in the forensic psychiatry inpatient service at New York's Bellevue Hospital Center, where she treated mentally ill incarcerated men from Rikers Island. Since 2018, she's been a faculty member in the UCSF Dept of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the medical director of Jail Behavioral Health Services at the San Francisco County Jail. In addition, she is a member of the ZSFG Ethics Committee and Ethics Consult Service.
