I care for children with diabetes mellitus and general endocrine disorders at the Oakland and Walnut Creek campuses and have a professional interest in addressing the causes of diabetes-related healthcare disparities. I am part of a team implementing the Novel Interventions in Children's Healthcare (NICH) Program at UCSF. NICH was developed at Oregon Health & Science University to help children with a chronic or complex medical condition (such as type 1 diabetes) who experience psychosocial vulnerabilities leading to poor health outcomes and avoidable healthcare utilization. NICH provides intensive case management, skills training and targets social determinants of health to help improve health outcomes and quality of life. I am co-principal investigator on a grant provided by the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to evaluate how NICH can be disseminated with fidelity at UCSF. I also serve as a faculty research mentor in the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Summer Student Research Program, which provides clinical research training opportunities for under-represented high school and undergraduate students.
