Angela Suen, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine. Her research focuses on improving care for people living with chronic lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease (ILD), with a particular emphasis on older adults. She studies important care transitions—especially the start of long-term supplemental oxygen—and how they affect day-to-day function, independence, and quality of life. Her work integrates geriatrics and palliative care principles to develop practical, person-centered programs that reduce treatment burden and help people maintain independence and quality of life at home.

Currently, her research is primarily supported by the UCSF Watsons Scholar Award, through which she is developing foundational evidence around geriatric and palliative care outcomes in supplemental oxygen use. Dr. Suen's clinical work is at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), where she attends in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). In addition, she also provides clinical care at the Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic at UCSF Parnassus and language-concordant care at the pulmonary clinic at Chinese Hospital. Her clinical work informs her research mission, grounding her commitment to patient-centered care that addresses the real-world challenges faced by patients and families.
