Let's improve patient outcomes by applying technology to improve clinical performance. There is very clear evidence out there in terms of what the right therapies are for patients but there has been a great deal of resistance in implementation of aids to improve human performance and reduce errors. I am currently seeking smart implementation of known protocols and routine standards of care. Cognitive aids may be as primitive as paper checklists to as sophisticated as custom applications or custom code within EMRs, but in the end the result is the same: We are elevating (human) clinician performance to the highest level by leveraging currently available technologies. Combinations of clinical decision support, clinical informatics, data visualization, cognitive aids, checklists, smart alerts, closed-loop communication, and team dynamics will get us to highly-reliable care and removing waste from healthcare.
