Kavon Javaherian, MD, MBA
Overview
Kavon Javaherian, MD, MBA, is an academic hospitalist, physician leader, and educator at the University of California, San Francisco. He serves as Associate Chief of Hospital Medicine and Physician Utilization Management Advisor at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System. His responsibilities span physician staffing and clinical operations, recruitment, shared physician performance oversight, patient safety, and interdisciplinary care redesign. He also serves as Vice Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
His improvement work focuses on building effective clinical processes across professional and organizational boundaries. Through stakeholder interviews, process mapping, and facilitated discussion, he helps teams identify barriers, clarify responsibilities, and implement sustainable changes. His initiatives include multidisciplinary rounds and discharge planning, transportation coordination, clinical escalation and interfacility transfer pathways, and stronger collaboration among inpatient clinicians, utilization management, and case management.
He previously co-directed the Lotus, a hospitalist-led short-stay rehabilitation unit connecting acute and post-acute care. He developed clinical workflows and an admission-screening dashboard and led the program evaluation as first and corresponding author. The published evaluation reported that facility-wide rehabilitation referral-to-hospital-discharge time, excluding referral holds, decreased from 6.89 to 3.35 days between fiscal years 2023 and 2025. His scholarship also includes electronic health record interventions for sepsis care, admission-workflow improvement, and communication with hospitalized patients.
He teaches UCSF medical students and internal medicine residents and serves as a longitudinal medical student coach in the Bridges Curriculum. His educational interests include clinical reasoning, reflective practice, and helping learners navigate complex care systems. He mentors trainees in quality improvement, implementation, evaluation, and scholarly dissemination, including projects addressing sepsis care and inpatient restfulness. In 2026, he received the UCSF School of Medicine Class of 2026 Excellence in Teaching Award for Clinical Faculty.
