    Dr. Mitsouras is Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at UCSF. His research focusses on leveraging physics, applied mathematics and computer science to develop new magnetic resonance and computed tomography medical imaging technologies to improve the care of patients with cardiovascular diseases. He is a recipient of a Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health, and a Magna Cum Laude Award from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). He has published >80 peer-reviewed articles and 7 book chapters, whose collective NIH iCite Relative Citation Ratio (https://icite.od.nih.gov) of 2.27 places above the 75th percentile of research publications stemming from NIH funding (11 articles above the 93rd percentile), and above the 90th percentile amongst the >24M publications indexed in iCite. Dr. Mitsouras has previously held faculty appointments in the Department of Radiology at Harvard Medical School, and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, Canada, and has served as Director of the Applied Imaging Science Lab in the Department of Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA, and as Associate Editor of the journal 3D Printing In Medicine.

    Dr. Mitsouras’ approach to education and mentorship centers on effectively teaching difficult scientific techniques to physician-scientists, and developing basic scientists into effective clinical scientists. He has developed or co-developed 7 CME courses for the RSNA on Clinical 3D Printing (2014-2018), Computational Fluid Dynamics (2016-2017) and Artificial Intelligence (2018) that have been attended by more than 1000 clinicians and clinical and science trainees to date. Since 2015, Dr. Mitsouras’ trainees have received 5 Research Awards from the RSNA, a Young Investigator Award from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), and a Young Investigator Award from the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT).

    In the last several years, Dr. Mitsouras’ research has focused on advancing the care of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) after discovering a pathway to improving patient-specific hemodynamic measurements via contrast kinetics in standard, non-invasive CT angiography images. Results from this NIH-funded work were featured on the April 2018 cover of the journal Radiology (Fractional Flow Reserve Estimated at Coronary CT Angiography in Intermediate Lesions. Radiology 2018;287(1):76-84), and his technique was subsequently implemented into a multi-national company’s CT-FFR product that was recently validated in a large multi-center trial (CT FFR for Ischemia-Specific CAD With a New Computational Fluid Dynamics Algorithm. JACC Cardiovasc Imaging 2019; doi: 10.1016/j.jcmg.2019.06.018). In addition Dr. Mitsouras continues to develop advanced vascular imaging MRI techniques, and to direct the use of 3D Printing and advanced visualization for enhanced surgical planning. His article on medical 3D printing is one of the 4 most-cited articles of the RSNA’s educational journal, RadioGraphics.
