I am a Senior Research Scientist at the San Francisco Department of Public Health and an Associate Professor at the University of California, San Francisco in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. I currently direct a research unit called the Trans Research Unit for Equity, or TRUE. I have been conducting community based research with trans communities in the U.S. and in low- and middle-income countries since 2003, and all my research focuses on addressing health among marginalized populations that are impacted by HIV. I focus on gathering real time data to monitor trends in HIV and social determinants of health using population-based sampling methods. I use mixed methods to design, implement and evaluate intervention studies that employ implementation science and traditional RCTs study designs. A large focus of my work is to tackle structures that promote stigma, which has the most significant impact on the health of marginalized populations. I dedicate a significant portion of my time to mentoring the next generation of scholars focused on reducing health disparities in HIV. I am also the President of the Board of Directors for TAJA’s coalition, whose mission is to end the genocide of trans women of color.
