In my research, I work to understand how health systems can improve implementation to meet users’ needs and preferences. I apply my expertise as an epidemiologist towards this goal in multiple ways, including:
    - Understanding user preferences for primary care services. Studies include discrete choice experiments on hypertension services in Karnataka, India and on reproductive health needs in Mississippi, USA.
    - Characterizing and improving program implementation within primary care systems. Studies include development and testing of measures of organizational readiness to provide HIV prevention and treatment programs in rural South Africa and a time-motion assessment within clinics in Lima, Peru.
    - Quantifying patient-reported experience, outcomes, and priorities for health services. Studies include assessments of self-reported measures of mistreatment during childbirth, cross-national surveys on population priorities for health service delivery in multiple countries in Latin America, and a pilot study of electronic patient-reported outcome (PRO) reporting for women receiving breast cancer treatment in Mexico City.

I also draw on my experience in study design, quantitative analyses, and complex measurement challenges to collaborate on projects both domestically and internationally. I have worked with the World Bank and the World Health Organization on health system quality and effective coverage measurement. I am interested in extending my research to include implementation trials of health service innovations.

Identifying clinic factors that shape population health outcomes in times of crisis
    CAPS Resource Allocation Program (Mentored Scientist Award) P30AI027763, A129590Mar 1, 2022 - Feb 28, 2023
    Role: PI
Description: To conduct secondary analysis of clinic factors and health outcomes for patients with HIV and/or with hypertension in the 12 months before and the first 12 months of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Making the People's Voice Heard on Health System Quality
    Inter-American Development Bank RG-T3768-P004Jan 6, 2022 - Dec 1, 2023
    Role: PI
Description: Develop and implement two instruments for health system quality assessment in Colombia, Peru, and Uruguay. The People's Voice Survey is a population-representative phone survey designed to capture population preferences for health service use, patient-reported experience of care, and confidence in the health system, particularly during the Covid pandemic. The e-cohort is a longitudinal assessment of health service quality for non-communicable disease based on repeated mobile assessments of respondents. This project is a collaboration among UCSF, the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) and the Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS) in Argentina.
