    Collapse overview
Dr. Christine Blauvelt is a perinatologist, a specialist in the care of patients experiencing high-risk pregnancies. Her role includes helping patients manage preexisting conditions that can affect pregnancy, including diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart disease, as well as complications that arise during pregnancy. She performs fetal ultrasound and prenatal diagnostic testing, and she cares for patients who are hospitalized with obstetric conditions. She has a particular interest in improving outcomes for patients with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, focusing on better blood pressure monitoring during pregnancy and the postpartum period and on ways to reduce the long-term risk of developing cardiovascular problems.

In research, Dr. Blauvelt investigates how infections during pregnancy affect the placenta and contribute to complications, such as fetal growth restriction, preeclampsia and preterm birth. To learn more about these complications and to develop strategies to avoid them, her work combines prospective clinical studies – which follow groups of patients over time – with advanced molecular techniques.

Multi-Omics Profiling of Maternal-Fetal Vascular Responses to Placental Malaria
    University of California, San Francisco Research Allocation Program/UCSFAug 1, 2025 - Aug 1, 2026
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: This study uses multi-omics approaches to evaluate gene expression and DNA accessibility in placental vascular cells, aiming to define the molecular and epigenetic changes underlying malaria-associated fetal growth restriction (FGR). The long-term objective is to identify molecular markers and pathways specific to malaria-associated FGR and to develop affordable, practical tools for monitoring FGR in malaria-endemic settings.
Remote Blood Pressure Monitoring Among High-Risk Obstetric Patients to Decrease Unnecessary Inpatient Utilization
    University of California, San Francisco CaringWiselyJun 1, 2025 - Jun 1, 2026
    Role: Co-PI
Description: This project supports the expansion of a remote blood pressure (BP) monitoring program for patients with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
Immune responses to urinary tract infection in pregnancy and impact on placental development
    NICHD T32 HD098057Feb 1, 2024 - Jan 31, 2025
    Role: T32 Postdoctoral Fellow
Description: The goal of this research is to generate preliminary data on the mechanisms linking antepartum infection to increased risk of preterm birth, providing a foundation for future studies. The long-term objective is to refine clinical management of maternal infections and develop targeted interventions to prevent infection-related preterm birth and its downstream consequences.
