    Maria Castro, M.D., is a general surgery resident at UCSF. She grew up in Sacramento, CA, and graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Human Biology. She completed medical school at UCSF and is currently pursuing a Master's in Education at UC Berkeley.

    Maria's clinical interests include pediatric surgery with a particular focus in pediatric trauma. Her research pursuits include surgical education, functional outcomes after pediatric injury, and the impact of health disparities on recovery after injury.

    As the 2025-2027 Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Trauma Research Fellow, Maria has implemented high-fidelity, interdisciplinary simulation-based training in pediatric trauma resuscitation.

    As a 2025-2027 Surgical Education Fellow in the UCSF Surgical Skills Lab, Maria designs the surgical curriculum for interns and second-year residents and leads weekly teaching sessions centering on open, laparoscopic, and robotic foundational skills. Her research focus in education includes studying Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA) assessment frameworks. She was also selected to complete 2026-2028 Association for Surgical Education Surgical Education Research Fellowship.

    Outside of the hospital, she loves spending time with her new baby, finding the best dahlias at the farmer's market, reading in the sunshine, and scuba diving.
