    Dr. Kryza-Lacombe's research focuses on the intersection of affective and cognitive processes and examines brain-behavior relationships drawing on perspectives from neuroscience, neuropsychology, and clinical psychology. She has focused particularly on positive valence system constructs, including neural reward processing, positive affect, and well-being. Through clinical experiences with older adults during her neuropsychology training, she developed a strong interest in how mental and cognitive health interact in aging.

    The role of positive valence system functions remains underexamined in aging research despite their importance for understanding resilience. Dr. Kryza-Lacombe is currently investigating how aging affects neural reward processing in depression and whether aberrant reward processes contribute to accelerated brain aging. Her impending work aims to comprehensively characterize neural positive valence system functions in late life depression using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This work will integrate these complementary methods to study neural mechanisms at the intersection of depression and cognitive decline and may provide a foundation for novel treatment targets. The ultimate goal of this research is to inform intervention approaches that prevent or address mental health disorders and cognitive dysfunction in older adults.

    Evaluating the role of major depressive disorder and aging in reward system neurophysiology

    Description: The goals of the project are three-fold: 1) examine the relationship between age and neural reward processing derived from task-based fMRI and EEG measures in individuals with and without Major Depressive Disorder; 2) derive brain age estimates using traditional algorithms that rely on brain structure, as well as novel algorithms that integrate structural data with functional neural reward measures; and 3) evaluate associations between psychological measures of reward-related dysfunction (e.g., anhedonia) and brain aging.
    Brain Responses Underlying Positive Valence System Functions in Late Life Depression

    Description: The goal of this project is to characterize neural Positive Valence System (PVS) dysfunction in late-life depression (LLD). Specifically, the proposed project aims to 1) evaluate differences in neural PVS functions in Veterans with LLD compared to non-depressed older Veterans using EEG and fMRI separately, 2) integrate temporal and spatial brain responses of PVS functioning in LLD using multimodal (i.e., conjoint) analyses, and 3) examine how individual differences in neural measures of PVS functioning relate to positive affect, motivation, and executive functioning performance in LLD.
