I am a behavioral neurologist with expertise in the evaluation and diagnosis of patients with primary progressive aphasia (PPA), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and Alzheimer’s dementia. My research program aims to understand how bilingualism, language typology, and sociocultural factors affect the clinical, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging findings in neurodegenerative diseases. The underlying goal of my work is to improve dementia diagnosis in communities of different language and sociocultural backgrounds.

The Role of Bilingualism in Cognitive and Brain Resilience: Addressing the Complexity
    NIH 1R01AG080396Apr 15, 2023 - Mar 31, 2028
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: The overarching goal of this multidisciplinary study is to provide a framework for bilingualism’s effect on the trajectory of healthy aging and Alzheimer’s disease, while accounting for the complexity underlying language experiences, executive functioning measures, and dementia types. The findings will improve care for people with diverse language backgrounds and give important insight into whether speaking more than one language can help prevent or slow the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD).
Cognitive Assessment for Tagalog Speakers (CATS): A pilot study in healthy aging and ADRD
    Alzheimer's Association AARGD-22-923915Jul 1, 2022 - Jun 30, 2025
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: The goal of this project is to develop and pilot a comprehensive neuropsychological battery for Tagalog speakers in healthy older adults and patients with ADRD and correlate findings with neuroimaging.
Primary Progressive Aphasia: Beyond the Clinical Variants
    NIH K23DC018021Apr 1, 2020 - Mar 31, 2025
    Role: Principal Investigator
Description: The goal of this study is to understand how neuropathology, genetic factors and linguistic factors (bilingualism, language typology) influence PPA phenotype through effects on neural networks.
Frontotemporal Dementia: Genes, Images, and Emotions
    NIH P01AG019724Jul 1, 2001 - May 31, 2022
    Role: Co-Investigator

Altmetrics Details PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
