    Dr. Ryutaro Hirose is a transplant surgeon who performs liver, kidney and pancreas transplants.

    Hirose's research interests include the induction of immunologic tolerance, immune monitoring and cancer in transplant patients. He has received research grants from the National Kidney Foundation and UCSF School of Medicine.

    Hirose earned his medical degree from Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, the medical school of Columbia University. He completed clinical research training at UCSF as a resident in general surgery and a fellow in molecular medicine and transplantation surgery.

    Hirose is involved in teaching medical students as well as residents and fellows in surgery. He serves as associate director of UCSF's general surgery residency program.
