He is the founder of the UCSF Echocardiography Laboratory and the UCSF Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic. He has played an integral role in the development of many diagnostic and treatment techniques including two dimensional echocardiography, transesophogeal echocardiography, Doppler pulmonary pressure determination, myocardial contrast perfusion and echocardiography phase imaging for ventricular coordination. In the areas of structural heart disease, he is an expert in the treatment of mitral and aortic valve diseases, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and congenital heart diseases.
RESEARCH INTERESTS: In collaboration with his colleagues, Schiller is involved in research in quantitation of cardiac function and structure, the biology and function of the left atrium, exercise physiology and hemodynamics in heart disease, body composition in heart disease, adult congenital heart disease, three-dimensional reconstruction, echocardiographic contrast agents for quantitation and myocardial perfusion, transesophageal echocardiography, physiology of renal disease, and outcomes in coronary disease as predicted by quantitative phenotyping,
