Dr. Steven Hays is a pulmonary and critical care specialist and lung transplant pulmonologist serving as Medical Director of the UCSF Lung Transplant Program — one of the nation's leading programs for patients with end-stage lung disease. With deep expertise guiding patients through every stage of the transplant journey, he cares for a broad range of complex conditions, including cystic fibrosis, emphysema associated with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, interstitial lung disease, and post-transplant care.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Hays is an active clinical investigator dedicated to advancing the frontiers of lung transplantation and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. As a principal investigator, he leads NIH-funded, industry-sponsored, and investigator-initiated trials aimed at developing the next generation of treatments for patients with serious lung disease.

Dr. Hays earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he was selected as chief resident. He went on to complete a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at UCSF, followed by specialized training in lung transplantation at Stanford Health Care.
